Diving And Snorkelling Part 3

Image
In Part 2 of diving and snorkelling, we covered fins and footwear. Next, we will have a look at protective divewear.

Here’s a scary thought. Water absorbs body heat twenty-five times faster than air – see this is important stuff. Even warm water will “pull” heat from your body. The normal body temperature is 98.6° F (37° C) and this should be maintained in water, which requires layers of protective wear depending on the water temperature as well as the particular needs of the diver.

Tolerance to cold can vary from person to person even when two people have the same physique. One may get cold while the other remains comfortable and that is why exposure suit needs are not exactly predictable. So you can’t go by what someone else says. You have to determine what is right for you.
There are general suggestions about what you should get based on your needs, but the amount of protection you personally would require is your choice.

We will look at some lycra dive suits, warm water favourite…

Solar Heating A Swimming Pool

Image
Solar heating a swimming pool can even make your pool a pleasure to swim in even during the summer months. Lately, we have been getting a lot of rain and the temperatures drop quite suddenly. We’ve even experienced temperature drops when it got quite windy recently. If you are a lover of water and don’t want to feel the chill then it’s a great idea to install a solar heater for your pool.

The Solar Shop is a company that specializes in solar pool heating. Their solar heating system effectively warms the water by means of solar radiation. I just love that.

Making use of solar energy is good for the environment and freely available from the sun. The Solar Shop makes use of the SolaRoll™ Pool Heating System which is a very durable product and does not warp, crack, rot, rust, corrode or chip. It is made of EPDM, a special rubber which is unaffected by ozone, heat or cold.

The cool thing about SolaRoll™ Pool Heating System is that you can install it all by yourself or leave it up to the ex…

Pool Nets - Every Pool Needs One

Image
Pool Nets - every pool needs a net to give you peace of mind.

Children and pets – sometimes even adults – can’t swim. They need your protection if you have a pool. Accidents happen at the most inopportune time.

How many people have drowned recently because they aren't good in the water or weren't being watched? Maybe you are having a party and your attention is somewhere else or you placed a child in the care of someone and they were busy and didn't notice that your beloved child had slipped away to explore the yard. Sounds familiar but incidences like these occur when you don’t want them to.

The best option is to safeguard your pool by adding a swimming pool net. DO IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE because how would you ever measure the cost of a life?

A pool net is definitely the answer and there is a company that manufactures top quality nets that would be custom-made for any pool shape or size.

Global Nets & Covers will gladly provide you with a quotation according to your ne…

How I Baked My First Quiche

Image
Hi, my name is Crystal and I'm a guest-blogger on my grandfather's blog.

"I came to my grandparents' house very early in the morning with a full packet of ingredients to start baking. my oumie told me we were going to be baking a lot, so we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. We first did the savoury quiche where we started chopping and then doing the pastry and then it went in the oven.

Next, we made the sweet dessert were all we did was beat orange jelly and vaporised milk and turned it together and added tennis biscuits and in the fridge it went.

Lastly, we made a chocolate smartie cake where all we did was put the main ingredients of a cake in and decorated it with smarties and then we washed the dishes and cleaned up. I really enjoyed my time with oumie and oupie. I learned a lot today. Now I can relax for the rest of the day."

It was a pleasant surprise to have my granddaughter with us today. We were not sure how we were going to keep her occupied, but …

Sniper Rifles

Image
Although many of us associate sniper rifles with military engagements where snipers lay hidden from view waiting to engage an unsuspecting member of the enemy at a great distance. I'm sure there are still instances like this in real life today. However, there is also another application where contestants compete in shooting events around the world.

At the 2015 Heatstroke Open, Team Surgeon shooter Jim See finished at the top of a 120 shooter field from Oklahoma and Texas. He commented that it was the highlight of his career and that his equipment performed to perfection all weekend.

The match was hosted in Camargo, Oklahoma and ran over two days with more than 230 target engagements. Local conditions were windy during the competition and Jim used his Surgeon Scalpel in 6.5×47 Lapua topped with a Vortex Gen 2 Razor to engage targets out to 1300 yards.

The Heatstroke Open was See’s second win of the 2015 PRS season. That was great shooting from Jim and his sniper rifle.

Diving and Snorkelling - Part 2

Image
In our first section on diving, we covered the snorkelling equipment and the mask. Now we will go a bit further and cover some of the other essential items that will make our diving experience a whole lot better.

Fins and Footwear

Fins enable us to propel ourselves underwater and increase the power of our feet thus reducing the energy we expend whilst submerged. This way greater distances can be covered with less effort.

Choosing Fins

There are two basic styles: the full-foot and the open heel. Full-fit fins fit like shoes and come in standard sizes. Open-heel fins, on the other hand, come in small, medium, large and extra-large sizes and hold the foot in place with an adjustable heel strap.

The open-heel fin and wetsuit boot should be considered as one unit and should be selected and fitted together.

Fins come in a variety of materials, designs and features so it's good to know these variations when choosing fins for your particular needs.

Materials

Fin blade materials include blac…

Supa-Fit Your Car

Image
December is a good time to Supa-Fit your car. Many people take a break to the family on the coast or elsewhere. The roads are very busy and the last thing you want is to have a problem with your car during this time. A good idea is to have your car checked before the time. If you live in Bonaero Park, Kempton Park, Benoni and surrounding areas then why not try Supa-Fit Mechanical Workshop at the GT Centre next to the Great North Road in Pomona. Supa-Fit is a one-stop vehicle repair and maintenance shop.

They cater for tyres, balancing and wheel alignment, keeping you safer on the road. They also do car service, exhausts, brakes, batteries and general vehicle maintenance in their well-equipped workshop. I once had a terrible accident towing a caravan which I loaned from my father-in-law who forgot to tell me to have the cv joints checked before going on holiday. Needless to say, we almost lost our lives in that accident and the caravan was a write-off and I had to buy him another cara…

Swimming Pool With Solar Heating

Image
I just love a pool with swimming pool solar heating! There's nothing better than seeing that inviting water and I just run and dive into it to cool down from the sweltering summer heat. It's one of my favourite things after a day's hard work, sweating and stressing at work. The summers can get really hot lately and a pool that's not too cold is lovely to swim in.

A friend of mine introduced me to a company that specializes in solar pool heating - The Solar Shop. Their system of installing a set of pipes on the roof of your house effectively warms the water by means of solar radiation. That's another thing I love. Making use of solar energy that's eco-friendly and freely available from our sun is the way of the future. They make use of the SolaRoll™ Pool Heating System which does not warp, crack, rot, rust, corrode or chip - very durable. Made of EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber) this material is unaffected by ozone, heat or cold. The cool thing ab…

On My Bicycle

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
I have just written a new blog post about being on my bicycle and how it actually came about.

It is probably the reason why I still cycle today, because when I was very young I got on a friend's bicycle and the cycling bug bit me.

Riding is one of my favourite ways of getting rid of stress and to unwind. When I ride it feels like I'm flying in an aeroplane with an open cockpit.

Maybe this sounds a bit silly, but I can feel the wind over my skin and smell the scents coming from grass and trees and flowers and someone making a braai (barbeque).

On my bicycle, I feel free! Read more.
